I had assumed that Dropbox etc were just using hacks. Relatedly I myself didn't realize how cool Finder extensions on macOS are, now, having just recently installed NewFileMenu and TermHere. Not to pile on but this is actually something I find with iOS all the time-a lot of people just don't know what it is capable of, whether it's document provider extensions, or just regular app/action extensions. iCloud Drive does almost all the things the op needs, but unfortunately there is no control on which file will be kept offline and which not. There's no way for a sync app to reach outside of its sandbox and into the sandbox of an editor app to sync the documents (or vice-versa: the editor can't access the sync app's sandbox to edit files).Īctually it can be done, an app can open a document from a document provider (instead of copying it). I don't see how that could possibly be implemented, given that apps are all individually sandboxed. Document Providers *can* support this but as near as I can tell none of them do. Dropbox but these are not exposed via the document provider.Īnyway, as I use iOS devices more I want to use them more like a Mac in terms of having centralized, "file system"-based storage instead of a series of app silos. You can set up "synced folders" that are kept in sync with e.g. Also it wipes out extended file attributes, but so does every other app besides Dropbox (and iCloud Drive).ĭocuments (app by Readdle): Local storage only. Its biggest flaw is that the iOS app *only* syncs when it's open there's no background refresh at all. Resilio, née BitTorrent Sync: This is the closest. Google Drive and OneDrive: Do not display offline files via the document picker or don't work offline at all. Box's documentation suggests that what I'm looking for is supported but the support people I ask say it's not it might be a pro feature or something. (they can only be viewed in the Box app). Dropbox supports the document picker interface only for sending and copying, not editing in place.īox: Displays offline files via the document picker, but they can't be opened by third-party apps. In other words, when I have chosen to have a folder saved offline on my iOS device I want it to work exactly like these apps work on the desktop: edits are made to the offline file, and then synced to the cloud.ĭropbox: No document provider support at all: They want you to use their special API only (though apps that do this can edit offline and sync when online. I would then be able to access, and edit offline files, even when I have no internet connection, via the iOS-standard document provider interface and not through apps hard-coding in special support for individual services. Does anyone know of such an app? I would like a cloud storage app that stays synced in the background, where I can select folders to be saved offline on my iPhone and iPad.
